Summer and Long Term Volunteering

volunteering

How you can volunteer

Glebe House recruits volunteers from home and abroad to participate and help out with its many programmes, in Strangford throughout the year.

and Mareike from Germany,

Volunteers work together as a team on the programmes and are helped by the programme staff and other experienced people.

Volunteers are needed throughout the year. There is a simple application procedure and after a few weeks applicants will be notified if they have been successful. People interested solely in volunteering for Summer residentials are recruited in the spring each year, for placements beginning in June and finishing in September. Volunteers are an essential part of the Glebe House programmes. They come from all walks of life and over the years we have taken volunteers from many countries worldwide.

what we look for

All volunteers must be over 18 years, but there are no upper age restrictions, we are happy to accept anyone who feels they are capable of taking on the challenge of volunteering. We are interested in receiving applications from people who have enthusiasm, motivation and energy for the work of Glebe House. If they are working with children and young people, volunteers should be prepared for a hectic but enjoyable experience. We are also wanting volunteers to help with the general running of the organisation doing a variety of tasks. Past experience can help, but is not essential, as Glebe House provides training and support to help you learn the ropes and gain experience.

volunteer activities

Volunteers will have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of activities including, arts and crafts, donkey rides, indoor & outdoor games, drama, nature trails and environmental work, team building, community relations and trips out in the local area.

children and young people's programme

The young people who take part in our programmes come from areas of Northern Ireland where there is social and economic disadvantage. All our programmes are cross-community. Most children are between the ages of 7 and 13 years old, but we also run programmes for teenagers. We have a policy of equal opportunity and social inclusion so a certain number of the young people who come to Glebe House may be disabled. The programmes run for periods varying from weekends, midweek and during July and August, 6 day residentials.

    Summer Volunteering

Each year, during June to August, Glebe House runs and supports a number of summer holiday programmes for various groups from around Northern Ireland and the Rep of Ireland.
To help with this very busy holiday period, volunteer work placements are available.
Full board and accommodation is provided, and some financial support can be given.
All volunteers get time off during this period and are not expected to participate in every programme.
Volunteers can get the opportunity to work in a number of areas including:
Working with children and young people, providing arts and crafts activities including painting, mural work, screen printing, model making and other art activities, helping with group activities and games, nature walks, swimming, donkey rides and much more.
Assisting the staff in maintaining a standard of cleanliness throughout the Centre.
Volunteers work as part of the programme staff team, working with groups residing at the centre for the duration of their stay.
This would usually involve working with both children and adults, or youth groups.
Glebe House also recruits local volunteers each year who assist with the above and are also available for a few days at a time, either midweek or at weekends, working directly with a group staying overnight or helping out with other tasks.
All volunteers work alongside the programme Staff.
The volunteers get the ideal opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills from a diverse group of people
Regular training is provided to help introduce new volunteers to our guidelines and procedures.
